Profile

Prior to signing the Bar Roll, Michael was a solicitor at Galbally & O’Bryan.

Since coming to the Bar, Michael has been briefed in a wide range of matters, including the following:

  • Criminal Law 
    • Appearing in bail applications, pleas, contests, committals, and summary jurisdiction applications in the Magistrates' Court and Children's Court.
    • Appearing in pleas and appeals in the County Court.
    • Appearing in s 32C Applications in the Magistrates’ Court and County Court.
    • Briefs to advise in drug trafficking and drug importation matters.
    • Briefs as junior counsel in matters involving major drugs offences, serious injury, culpable driving, and fraud. 
    • Briefs to advise and appear in compensation applications under s 85B of the Sentencing Act.
  • Administrative / Disciplinary Proceedings
    • Briefs to appear and advise, as junior counsel and sole counsel, in disciplinary proceedings before disciplinary boards and review proceedings in VCAT. 
    • Appearing in judicial review proceedings before the Supreme Court of Victoria. 
  • Planning / Building / Environment / OHS
    • Briefs to appear and advise in proceedings involving planning, environment and building offences, including in prosecutions brought by local government, the Victorian Building Authority, and the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning.
    • Appearing in Occupational Health and Safety proceedings. 
    • Appearing in domestic building contract proceedings in VCAT. 

As a solicitor, Michael worked on matters involving the Independent Broad-based Anti-corruption Commission (IBAC), the Office of the Chief Examiner, and the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse.

He holds a Bachelor of Arts and a Juris Doctor from the University of Melbourne. In the final year of his law degree, he received the Melbourne JD Award (Third Year) for finishing the top ranked student in the third year program, together with academic prizes in the following subjects: Legal ResearchLegal EthicsRule of Law, and Advocacy.

Since 2013, Michael has served on the Policy Committee of Liberty Victoria. 

Michael read with two mentors: Scott Johns, who specialises in criminal law, and Andrew Woods, who specialises in administrative and commercial law. His senior mentor is Michael O'Connell SC.
