Alison Burt is available to accept briefs in all areas of family law and related jurisdictions, including appearing at court and providing advice in matters involving parenting disputes, property cases, de facto cases, and child support.

Alison has twenty years’ experience as a solicitor in the UK, where she was admitted to practice in 1993. Her practice consisted exclusively of family matters, and she conducted most of her own advocacy including trials before the Family Division of the High Court. In 2010 she was appointed as a Deputy District Judge with a broad civil jurisdiction. She was ranked by Chambers and Partners UK as a top-rated family lawyer until she relocated to Australia in 2013.

Alison studied law as an undergraduate at Queens’ College, Cambridge. Since moving to Australia, Alison has undertaken a Master of Laws degree at Monash University. 

Alison read with Marylyn Smallwood. Her senior mentor is Geoff Dickson QC.

Since coming to the bar, she has appeared in the Children's Court, the Federal Circuit Court (in Melbourne and on circuit) and the Family Court of Australia, both led and unled. Her recent appearances include:

  • Adams & James [2015] FCCA 3417 (Federal Circuit Court, indemnity costs, proportionality)
  • Millar & Oakley  [2016] FCCA 1283 (Federal Circuit Court, children overseas whilst parents in Australia, whether Australia was appropriate forum, court's power to restrain father from leaving jurisdiction)
  • Doyle & Rusedski [2016] FamCA 317 (Family Court of Australia, review of parenting arrangements where final consent orders made previously, impact of conviction for assault on finding of family violence where facts disputed, restraint on international travel where one party alleged flight risk)

Alison presented a paper comparing the English and Australian approaches to fairness in property settlement at the 2016 National Family Law Conference in Melbourne.

She is a member of the Family Law Section of the Law Council of Australia, the Family Law Bar Association and the Children's Court Bar Association.
