Profile

Prior to coming to coming to the Bar, Sam Tovey worked as a solicitor in the Criminal Law department at Galbally & O’Bryan, one of Melbourne's leading criminal law firms. Having joined the firm as an articled clerk, Sam had carriage of a wide range of criminal and quasi-criminal matters in all Victorian Courts.

Since coming to the bar, Sam has appeared in a wide variety of criminal cases, including:

  • Criminal Appeals to the Court of Appeal (both interlocutory and sentence);
  • Trials and pleas in the County Court and Supreme Court of Victoria;
  • Disciplinary matters at various tribunals such as the AFL Tribunal, Racing Victoria Appeals Tribunal, in addition to VCAT and the AAT; and
  • Bail applications, pleas, hearings and contested committals in the Magistrates’ Court.

While Sam has a wide variety of experience in all areas of criminal law including drugs, assault, sexual offences, deception and money laundering, he has gained particular experience acting for clients prosecuted for 'white-collar' offences.

Sam holds an Indictable Crime Certificate (IIC) and is on the VLA Criminal Trial Preferred Barrister List.

Alongside his criminal practice,  Sam also accepts briefs and appears in Occupational Health and Safety matters.
