Family lawyers, are neither qualified, nor insured to provide clients with expert taxation advice. They are, however, required to understand the potential tax consequences of property settlements and to know when to refer clients to their accountants for taxation advice. The purpose of this paper is to assist practitioners in identifying when and how tax can be an issue when you are negotiating a property settlement.
