Jennifer McGarvie practises in the areas of criminal law and common law/personal injury.

Jennifer accepts briefs in all criminal matters including crimes against the person, sexual assault, drug offences, traffic offences and property offences.  She is available to appear in summary and indictable matters in all metropolitan and regional courts.  Since coming to the Bar, Jennifer has been briefed to appear in a wide range of matters, including:

  • Pleas, bail applications, contested hearings, contest mentions and other applications in the Magistrates' Court.
  • Children’s Court, Drug Court and Koori Court matters.
  • Pleas for indictible matters in the County Court
  • Sentence appeals and breach proceedings in the County Court.
  • Section 32C applications in the County Court.
  • Compensation applications under section 85B of the Sentencing Act.
  • Contested IVO hearings and IVO appeals in the County Court. 

Jennifer also accepts briefs in all common law, personal injury and workers compensation matters.  She is available to prepare documents, advise and appear in serious injury applications, common law damages matters and statutory benefits hearings.

Before coming to the Bar, Jennifer was the Senior Associate to Her Honour Judge Davis at the County Court.  In this role, she gained considerable experience in both the criminal and common law divisions of the County Court, supporting Her Honour in the conduct of criminal trials, fitness investigations and special hearings, pleas, appeals, bail applications, common law damages trials and serious injury applications.  She also assisted Her Honour sitting as Vice President at VCAT, where she gained exposure to disciplinary hearings and review and regulation matters.

Jennifer commenced her legal career as a solicitor at Piper Alderman.  She holds a Bachelor of Laws (with Honours) and Bachelor of Commerce from Monash University.

Jennifer read with Matt Fisher and Jim Fitzpatrick.  Her senior mentor is Julie Condon QC.
