As an undergraduate Jonathan Slonim won several awards for advocacy including the prize for best advocate in the Australian final of the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition and the Monash University Law Alumni Undergraduate Award.

From 1986-1989 Jonathan practised in commercial litigation with Abbott Stillman & Wilson and then Madden Butler Elder & Graham and began to specialise in Customs and Excise law. He then worked for Duesburys Chartered Accountants as a Manager in Indirect Taxation during 1990.

From 1991-1993 Jonathan was a Consultant and then Partner with Wisewoulds where he practised in Customs & Excise and other aspects of International Trade law including international licences and distribution arrangements and the structuring of Australian subsidiaries of foreign manufacturers and exporters.

Jonathan has given evidence to the Industry Commission and a number of Senate committees on behalf of the Law Council regarding various aspects of Customs policy and legislation and drafted several policy papers.

He appears regularly before the Commonwealth Administrative Appeals Tribunal in Customs and Excise matters and before the Federal Court in appeals from the AAT. Jonathan has also appeared before the Magistrates Court in Quarantine prosecutions as well as general commercial disputes.

Areas of interest include Customs & Excise, Quarantine Law, Bounties, Goods and Services Taxes, Sales Tax, Trade Practices and commercial law.
