ABOUT US - Foley's List

Foley’s List is an independent group of 220 barristers who own and operate their own list. Foley’s List is not operated by an individual clerk for profit but run by the barristers who make up the List.

Barristers have traditionally operated in groups with “a Clerk” responsible for their administration. The Clerk is able to indicate to the solicitor what barristers are suitable for their problem and who are available and the likely fee range. When Owen Dixon Chambers was built in 1961 the Victorian barristers moved en masse to a new location at 205 William Street. Victorian barristers continued to maintain the clerking system that had been in use since the start of the Bar in Victoria. Foley’s office is located now on the ground floor of 205 William Street. The office is staffed by 5 clerks who can advise on:

  1. a barrister’s area of practise;
  2. their level of experience;
  3. their fee range; and
  4. their availability.

The senior clerk is John Kelly who is supported by Suzie Cameron LLB (both solicitors) with 3 other clerks. The Foley office has a telephone system which can take messages for barristers and connect solicitors to barristers. It is manned by 3 telephonists from 8.30 am to 6.00pm Monday to Friday. Outside normal hours any one of the five clerks can advise solicitors as to the barristers’ availability etc. To contact the clerks please use “Contact Us”. Briefs and other documents are usually forwarded to the clerk’s office to be sent on to the barristers. Foleys employs a team of messengers who deliver briefs and collect documents from barristers’ chambers.

Mr. Paul Grieve is the Foley’s List accountant with a computerised accounting system. The barristers on Foley’s List have their fees sent out and collected by the Foley’s accounts team. Solicitors can pay by cheque, electronic transfer or credit card via BPay. To contact the barrister a solicitor can either contact the barrister direct or go through the Foley switchboard. If the barrister is unavailable a message will be left with our telephonists or one of our clerks may be able to assist you.

Our clerk fee is 3.18% (plus GST) which in any financial year is capped at $25,000 (plus GST). The clerk's fee is only payable when the barrister receives payment of his/her fees. Once the cap is reached the barrister does not pay any further clerk's fee in that financial year.
